Do you guys use pesticides?\u00a0 It\u2019s a question we often get asked and would love to clarify:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We are not an organic farm, but instead we follow integrated pest management which we believe to be a responsible way to produce food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We look at pesticides like antibiotics. It\u2019s not something we want to use all the time, but in order to avoid death, it\u2019s certainly a necessity.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Integrated Pest Management<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At Quinn Farm, we use Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which means we do everything possible to avoid using pesticides and then use the least harmful if possible. All of our pest control is very targeted to specific pests or diseases.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There are three different levels of harmfulness in insecticides: green, yellow and red (green being least harmful). We will always attempt to use the least harmful first, a yellow only if needed, perhaps a few times a year, and almost never a red. Green could be letting the grass grow in the orchard so the insects target that rather than our apple trees and so that beneficial insects can thrive in the diverse plant life and help us to control the harmful insects, this way we do not have to spray as much insecticide.<\/span><\/p>

There are also delays to be respected: insecticides break down with the exposure to sun and rain (which is why we have to reapply them) – we never harvest or let people pick until those delays have been respected, which should mean there are no longer any traces of chemicals.<\/span><\/p>

Some of our standard practices with IPM:<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

  • We work closely with an agronome who monitors all pests (insects, fungus, disease, weeds) and helps us control these in the best way possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries may be susceptible to fungus, but usually in years where there is a lot of rain, so we will only use fungicides then and only targeted at specific fungus. We also make sure it is applied at the right time so that we can use a much less harsh product.<\/span><\/li>
  • Apples are harder to grow and we do have to use pesticides, although we try to use as little as possible and to intervene as early as possible to avoid having to use a lot.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  • We do have to use a little bit of insecticide on our sweet corn for the corn bore. Another way to treat it, is to introduce a particular parasitic wasp, which allows us to reduce our insecticide use.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

    A lot of farm visitors look for organic fruits & vegetables, having read about the \u201cDirty Dozen\u201d (fruits and vegetables that have been found to have higher traces of chemicals). We feel that this research is lacking because it doesn\u2019t look into traces of natural pesticides found on organic fruits and vegetables. In organic production, copper spray may be used up to ten times a season to control mold. With IPM, we would never use it on strawberries, only on apple trees early on and never more than once a year and at a very low dose, as it is a heavy metal and can be detrimental to useful insects and soil quality. Of course it doesn\u2019t mean every organic farm uses it, nor does it mean every farmer using IPM is respecting the once a year rule\u2026<\/span><\/p>

    Our Other Farming Practices<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    We use good farming practices to maintain soil and crop health (such as applying compost, using cover crops, ensuring healthy plants so they are less susceptible to disease). We apply fertilizer when needed to meet nutritional needs specific to the crop and if necessary we use natural and scientifically developed treatments to deal with disease and pests in order to save the crop.<\/span><\/p>

    We collect organic matter from landscapers and leaves from municipalities and compost it. We use the compost on many of the acres we farm, applying about 1,000 tons each year. We build organic matter and improve soil quality through the use of compost, minimum till, and cover crops.<\/span><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    After the sweet corn season, we plant red clover to increase organic matter, improve soil texture and reduce erosion which also maintains soil flora and fauna (fungus and bugs). Our spring runoff water is accumulated in a dammed pond and used as irrigation for our crops. Overhead irrigation is only used for frost protection in the spring, a more sustainable trickle irrigation is used to provide plants with water during dry spells in the summer.<\/span><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/p>

    You may notice in our fields more weeds than you\u2019re used to seeing, farmers generally consider weeds as undesirable because they are competing with their crops for space, nutrients, water and sun, thus lowering production from a given field. However it also requires a lot of work and money to remove weeds, either by hoeing by hand, cultivating with tractors or spraying herbicide. We choose to do as little as possible due to the economic demands, as well as trying to limit the amount of herbicide used, while still ensuring we have a healthy crop. We also believe that if there was nothing but apples in the orchard, the bugs have no option but to eat apples, by giving them other options we can reduce the amount of insect damage without having to use as much insecticide.<\/span><\/p>

    Not all insects are pests, there are harmful ones that damage and destroy crops and there are beneficial ones. On our farm we monitor the levels of insects by using pheromone traps, this allows us to monitor the different levels and determine when a specific insect has passed a predetermined threshold. This way we can treat for specific pests as soon as they become a problem, instead of waiting until it\u2019s too late (which requires harsher chemicals and more of them). When we do have to use treatments, we always try to use the less toxic ones, generally at an early stage in the plant\u2019s growth before it has developed edible parts and when it is most vulnerable to destruction by harmful pests.<\/span><\/p>

    \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    \u201cSpraying\u201d has developed a negative connotation. However, it is a tool used by virtually all farmers, whether organic or not. Sometimes we foliar feed (spray nutrient elements onto the leaf surface), which is a low impact way of meeting a plant\u2019s nutritional needs. Organic growers may only use biological and natural chemicals to kill the pests that attack crops, though they are still classified as pesticides. Conventional growers will use both natural and synthetic material to stop unusual infestations. Whenever we are making decisions on what treatment to use, we work in conjunction with our agronome to determine the best course of action.<\/span><\/p>

    All in all, our goal is to maintain environmental balance and promote conditions favoring beneficial insects. We use an insecticide when \u201cbad\u201d insects extend beyond the natural balance, and then only when necessary to save the crop.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
